Jungle Leaf Shadow Hunt

Preparation
Materials
- Fresh leaves in different shapes and sizes
- Small twigs
- Ferns or grass
- A few natural loose parts
- White wall or large white paper
- Optional: translucent leaves/flowers
Tools
- Cool-running LED spotlight or torch
- Small table or floor mat
- Clips/tape
- Basket for collecting natural materials
Safety
- Use torch light or cool-running LED light
- Keep electrical cables secured and out of children’s walking paths.
- Children should not stare directly into the light.
Setup
Create a small “Jungle Explorer Station.”
Place the natural materials in a basket.
Position the light so that objects can create clear shadows on a nearby white wall or vertical surface.
Start with only a few objects rather than putting everything out at once.
Invitation:
“Look! The jungle has shadows. Can you discover what is making them?”
Steps
1. Explore the objects
Allow children to touch, look at and compare the leaves.
2. Make a shadow
Hold one leaf between the light and wall.
3. Change the size
Move the leaf closer to the light and then closer to the wall.
4. Experiment
Try different leaves, twigs and combinations.
5. Create a jungle
Layer several objects together to make a large “jungle shadow.”
6. Move the light
Change the direction of the light and observe how the shadow changes.
7. Trace the shadow
Trace the leaf shadows on the large drawing paper on the wall to see how many leaf shadows can create an amazing jungle on the wall!
